Why Tiamat Still Resonates

There are forces in myth that shake the foundations of our understanding and challenge us to see beyond the ordinary. Tiamat is one of those forces. She is the primal chaos, the vast ocean of creation, and the Mother of Dragons. Her story, emerging from Babylonian mythology, reminds witches that creation often begins in disorder and that transformation comes when we face the raw and untamed aspects of life.

I first encountered Tiamat during a time when my world felt fragmented. My routines, my plans, and my expectations all seemed to unravel at once. Turning to her story, I imagined the great sea of chaos from which all things were born. In that vision, I realized that my life was mirroring her vast, limitless energy. She embodies the power of beginnings that emerge from endings and the strength found in the unknown.

Tiamat in Myth and Magic

Tiamat’s mythology presents her as both creator and destroyer. From her body, the first gods and dragons emerged. She is both feared and revered, a symbol of primordial power that predates order. Her dual nature teaches that destruction is not merely an end, but a necessary step in the cycle of creation. For modern witches, she represents the forces that exist before structure, the raw energies that can be shaped through magic, intention, and understanding.

Her story reminds us that chaos is not something to fight against. It is a necessary partner in transformation. Magic flows most powerfully when we acknowledge the unknown and embrace it. Tiamat teaches that strength comes from facing the primal forces within and around us.

Walking with Tiamat

Working with Tiamat requires courage and openness. Rituals often involve water, symbolizing her primordial oceans, and fire, symbolizing creation and transformation. Lighting a deep blue or green candle near water, reflecting on personal challenges, and visualizing the swirling currents of chaos are ways to connect with her energy. Journaling and shadow work are also key practices, allowing us to explore fears, desires, and the hidden aspects of the self that Tiamat illuminates.

Her energy also reminds witches that creation is not linear. Life unfolds in cycles, sometimes appearing chaotic, sometimes beautifully ordered. Tiamat teaches patience with ourselves and the unfolding of events, encouraging trust in the transformative process that emerges from the unknown.

Integrating Tiamat’s Lessons

To walk with Tiamat is to recognize that power exists in both chaos and creation. She guides witches to see the potential in endings, the wisdom in disruption, and the energy that flows when we release control. Her presence strengthens intuition, fosters courage, and reveals the hidden threads connecting us to the primal forces of life.
