Why Protection Matters
The first time I slipped into a deep black mirror session, I thought I was prepared. The candlelight flickered, the room was still, and the mirror’s surface began to shift. What looked like a simple reflection opened into something much deeper, like a tunnel pulling me in. Images rushed past too quickly to hold, emotions swelled until I wasn’t sure if I was afraid, exhilarated, or simply overwhelmed. When I finally pulled back, the energy lingered with me for hours, reminding me that this was no ordinary tool. That experience taught me a lesson I never forgot, the black mirror deserves respect, and protection is not optional.
Setting Sacred Space
In the beginning, when I shared my first steps with the mirror , my work was gentle and cautious. A single candle, a softened gaze, nothing forced. But as I went further, I realized the mirror reveals more than fleeting shapes or vague impressions. It reflects hidden truths, pulls at the subconscious, and sometimes shows what we would rather not see. That is its gift, but also its danger if approached without care.
Creating sacred space became my first act of protection. Sometimes that was as simple as sprinkling salt around my working space or burning cleansing incense before sitting down. Other times, especially when the energy of the day felt heavy, I cast a full circle. The act itself wasn’t about fear, it was about drawing boundaries. It told my spirit that what happened here was sacred, intentional, and safe. You could say it’s the difference between opening a door and stepping outside into the street, versus opening a door into a well-tended garden. The energy responds to the container you create.
Inviting Protective Allies
Another lesson I learned was that I didn’t have to face the mirror alone. I began inviting protective allies into the work. Sometimes it was a deity, sometimes an ancestor, and sometimes a spirit animal that had walked with me for years. The difference was immediate. The visions felt calmer, less chaotic, as though someone was gently guiding what flowed through. I remember one evening when I asked my grandmother to stand with me. The mirror opened with unusual clarity that night, but instead of being overwhelming, it felt steady, as if I had a hand to hold in the darkness. That was when I understood that the mirror is not just about what we see, it’s also about who we invite to see it with us.
Facing the Shadow
Then came the shadows. The mirror is a master at pulling up what we bury. I once sat before it and watched as my own reflection began to shift. My face grew unfamiliar, almost distorted, and with it came a flood of anger I hadn’t wanted to acknowledge. At first I recoiled, but I knew this wasn’t some dark spirit pressing in, it was me. The mirror had become the surface where my hidden wounds rose to meet me. That moment began a long process of shadow work, and I learned to keep a journal close by. Even the smallest details — a flicker of movement, a sudden feeling, a strange symbol — became part of a larger pattern when recorded over time. Weeks later, I would read back and see connections I hadn’t noticed in the moment. That was the mirror speaking in its own language, and journaling became the way to understand it.
Symbols and Messages
As I moved deeper into the practice, I began noticing that the mirror didn’t always give me clear visions. Sometimes I would see symbols instead: a geometric pattern, an animal, a flash of color. They rarely made sense right away, but when I trusted them, they often resurfaced later in dreams, tarot spreads, or synchronicities in my daily life. I learned not to demand meaning in the moment, but to record and wait. The mirror’s messages, I found, often unfold in layers, and patience is as much a part of the practice as the act of gazing itself.
Closing the Gate
One of the most important habits I developed was closing the work properly. In the early days, I sometimes walked away as soon as the session felt finished, only to find myself distracted by lingering images hours later. Now, when the mirror session feels complete, I thank it, extinguish the candle, and cover the glass with a cloth. If I opened a circle, I close it with intention. This small ritual became the way to tell myself and the energies around me that the gate is shut until I choose to open it again. It has made all the difference in keeping mirror work from bleeding into ordinary life.
A Teacher in the Shadows
Over time, I came to see the black mirror not just as a divinatory tool but as a teacher. At first it reflects only your own face. Then the surface ripples with shadows and light. Then it opens into depths you never knew were there. Each stage teaches patience, courage, and respect. It is not something to be rushed or forced, but something to be entered like a conversation, one where silence, listening, and boundaries matter as much as questions.
This is why I chose to write a book dedicated to the black mirror. It isn’t just about rituals and techniques, but about the way this tool reshapes us, showing not only what lies beyond but also what lies within. For me, the black mirror became more than polished glass — it became a companion, a portal, and sometimes even a mirror to my soul.

In future posts, I’ll share how this practice deepened further, especially in dreamwork, where the mirror became a bridge into lucid dreams and nighttime visions. That was when I realized the black mirror wasn’t confined to ritual space — it had the power to weave itself into every corner of my magical life.
