Why Lilith Still Matters Today
The first time I encountered Lilith in my studies, she wasn’t a goddess or a demon — she was a whisper. A name half-hidden in footnotes, a warning tucked between lines of scripture, a shadowy figure that seemed too dangerous to fully acknowledge. The more I read, the more I noticed her absence. Lilith was everywhere and nowhere at once. She existed in myths, midrash, folklore, and occult writings, yet always on the margins, as if her very presence challenged the stories we had been told.
For witches, seekers, and magicians, Lilith’s story still matters because she represents something we all wrestle with: the right to choose freedom, even when it costs us belonging.
From Myth to Archetype
In some Jewish traditions, Lilith was Adam’s first wife — a woman who refused to submit, who spoke the unspeakable word “no.” Her refusal to lie beneath Adam wasn’t about petty rebellion; it was about equality, dignity, and the refusal to be diminished. For that, she was cast out, demonized, and written into centuries of lore as a dangerous seductress, a baby-killer, a witch who stalked the night.
But for many modern witches, Lilith isn’t a monster. She is an archetype of the untamed feminine, of self-sovereignty, of defiance in the face of unjust power. She carries the energy of the outsider, the rebel, the one who will not bow even when the cost is exile.
When I first began working with her energy, I felt a sharp edge of fear. Inviting Lilith into ritual is like opening a door to your own shadows — she will not flatter you, she will not coddle you, she will not let you cling to illusions. And yet, her presence is strangely liberating. She demands honesty, and in that raw honesty, there is profound power.
Lilith in the Modern Witch’s Practice
Working with Lilith can take many forms. Some call to her in prayer, others light candles in her name, some dive into dreamwork and shadow practices to meet her in the liminal spaces. For me, Lilith often appears as a voice in the margins of my journaling, as if she is writing alongside me, coaxing me to dig deeper and shed the stories I’ve inherited that no longer serve me.
Her lessons are rarely comfortable, but they are always transformative. Lilith teaches us to face the parts of ourselves we’ve been taught to hide — our anger, our hunger, our sensuality, our refusal to conform. In that confrontation, she offers liberation.
If you are curious about starting this work, I’d suggest beginning with meditation and reflection rather than rushing into invocation. Ask yourself: Where in my life do I feel silenced? Where have I traded truth for comfort? Where am I still afraid to stand in my full power? These questions are Lilith’s doorway.
Bringing Lilith Into Your Path
Lilith is not a spirit you “command.” She is a force you invite, and even then, she remains her own. Her presence in modern witchcraft is not about submission but about partnership — a reminder that power is not given, it is claimed. Whether you view her as goddess, archetype, or spirit of rebellion, Lilith offers a mirror into our own shadow and strength.
If this speaks to you, I’ve poured my research and personal experiences into Understanding Lilith, a book that dives into her myth, her magic, and her relevance for witches today. It’s written for those ready to meet her on her own terms, with reverence, curiosity, and courage.
Next on the Path: Understanding Brigit
In the next blog post, we’ll step from shadow into flame. While Lilith brings us into the wilderness of defiance, Brigit carries us into the hearth-fire of inspiration, healing, and craft. Where Lilith whispers in the night, Brigit shines in the morning. Together, they form a balance — shadow and flame, rebellion and creation.
Stay tuned for Understanding Brigit — a look at the goddess of poetry, smithcraft, and healing fire, and how she continues to inspire witches and seekers today.
